Landfill Model

Due Wednesday, April 2

Landfill Model Project

Derived from rubric: Landfill Model Project
built by tmegahan

Rubric Code: PAX62X
Design and build a model of a modern day landfill. Be sure to include and LABEL the following structures on your 3-D model:

1. synthetic liner
2. clay liner
3. leachate storage tank (or pond)
4. leachate pipes
5. exterior methane probes
6. leachate monitoring wells
7. groundwater
8. geotextile fabric
9. Persistent Organic Pollutants identified and color-coded so we can tell if they appear in the leachate (probably Koolaid or food coloring)
10. A list of the trash in your cells organized by types.

Make sure you puncture the lid of the inverted two liter bottle. We will use food coloring or Koolaid to represent POPs. The layers and lining should prevent contamination of the leachate. We will test your design by pouring water through the top of the landfill.

Make sure the layers and the trash are visible from the side view.

You can utilize more structures if you wish for a better grade. Use the picture from page 469 in textbook to help you.

Completion
Poor

Project less than 50% complete.
Fair

Project 50%-74% complete. Some parts still need to be made. Not all labeled. Items still need to be attached.
Good

Project more than 75% complete. Did not quite finish. Possibly still needing to attach items.
Excellent

Project 100% complete. Items are labeled. Everything is attached.
Accuracy
Poor

Components are mislabeled. Key parts of the landfill are not there.
Fair

Landfill not correctly designed. Some items clearly misplaced.
Good

A few labels incorrect. Location of 2 or less items are misplaced.
Excellent

All labels are correct. Parts of the landfill are in the correct place and make logical sense.
Neatness
Poor

Very unorganized and sloppy. Maybe some loose parts.
Fair

4 to 5 items not neatly placed. Looks unorganized.
Good

One to three items a little sloppy or unorganized.
Excellent

Very neat, organized. Items carefully placed and put together. Project intact and nothing falling apart.
Creativity
Poor

Poor creativity. Used few materials and most were ill suited for their purpose.
Fair

Fair Creativity. Looks like most others. A few materials ill suited. Average attention to details.
Good

Good Creativity. Project shows some thought. Used a variety of materials. Only a few may not have been well suited.
Excellent

Excellent Creativity. Used a variety of materials that were well suited to their function. Great attention to details.
Group Participation
Poor

Poor cooperation in group. One person did just about all of the work. Possible personality conflicts.
Fair

Fair cooperation. One or more individuals did the majority of the work. Possibly personality conflicts.
Good

Good cooperation. Worked fairly well together.
Excellent

Great cooperation. Everyone worked together, shared ideas, and helped build the model.
Leachate Pollutants
Poor

The Presence of One Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS) is indicated. The pollution pathway is demonstrated.
Fair

The Presence of at least two Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS) is represented. The pollution pathway is demonstrated. A key indicates which POPS are present.
Good

The Presence of Three Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS) is represented. The pollution pathway is demonstrated A key indicates which POPS are present.
Excellent

The Presence of Four or more Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPS) is represented. The pollution pathway is demonstrated. A key indicates which POPS are present.
Report
Poor

Lab report with some portions missing.
Fair

Full lab report with a well developed hypothesis and clear conclusions.
Good

Full lab report with a well developed hypothesis and clear conclusions. Introduction includes background on the problems of landfill.
Excellent

Full lab report with a well developed hypothesis and clear conclusions. Introduction includes background on the problems of landfill, and detailed information about the hazards of groundwater contamination.
Trash
Poor

At least three categories of Municipal solid waste are represented in the refuse cell.
Fair

At least five major categories of Municipal solid waste are represented in the refuse cell.
Good

All categories of U.S. Municipal are represented in the refuse cell.
Excellent

Contents of the refuse cell are based on the graph on figure 19.2, U.S. Municipal Solid Waste, page 467 as indicated by chart.
