Chapter 14 Geology and Earth Resources

Chapter 14 Overview

Plate tectonics and the rock cycle shape the Earth and its resources. Mining Earth’s resources creates environmental issues. All AP students should know the environmental and economic costs/benefits of mining. Conservation of resources is a fundamental AP topic. Geologic hazards, including earthquakes, tsunamis,
and floods have devastating effects on natural ecosystems.

Chapter 14 Powerpoint

Cornell Notes Questions due Friday. This is a required grade. I will check these questions. This is homework.

Freyer Model for the Case Study for Chapter 14 due Wednesday

Plate Discovery Activity due end of class Wednesday
Photocopy a map of the world (we will use the globes) and provide a copy to each student. Provide students with either 2 different colored dot stickers (yellow and red) or 2 different colored markers. Using the internet and the USGS website, students will find research and discover the earthquakes for the last 20 years. Have them place a yellow dot on each location. Students will put a red dot on the map for the locations of volcanic eruptions in the last 20 years. When the students are finished have them compare their maps to Figure 14.3 in the textbook. The students should be able to discuss the similarities and differences of the two maps.

Coal Investigation Lab

Visit the Department of Energy's (DOE) website and learn about the how coal is formed and the four types of coal. Read about the clean up, and relate this information to air-quality issues in Bejing.

Check out Bejing's current PM2.5 particle pollutants

Check out Dallas' current PM2.5 particle pollutants. Texas ranks high in coal production. Are we a coal state? Are we headed in the same direction as Bejing?

Write a feature article for the school newsletter addressing our coal use and possible outcomes. No more than 200 words. Turn in Thursday.

Cornell Notes Questions for Review:
1. What is the 1977 federal Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act
(SMCRA)?

2. How does resource extraction affect water quality? Give a specific example.

3. What are two environmental impacts of mining?

4. How can recycling save energy as well as resources?

5. Why are floods considered the greatest geological hazard?

DOL Questions: Included in the notes

Practice Questions
Multiple Choice:
Directions for questions 1-5: The lettered choices below correspond to the descriptions given in questions 1-5. Select the one lettered choice that best fits each statement. Each choice may be used once, more than once, or not at all.

2. nuclear plant meltdown as a result of a tsunami
3. flooding as the result of a hurricane
4. volcanic eruptions currently occurring
5. mass wasting as a result of drought and then torrential rainfall

  1. The geologic process can have effects on the places we live. People should know about the geologic time of nearby places so that we can prepare about the geologic hazards. It is one of challenging system in the earth system. The page in the text link is about geologic hazards of earthquake.
